Chapter 68 A Hotpot Gathering Between Rivals

"Jinsui, I haven’t gone out in a while. Can I come with you?" Qin Chengyu’s voice was calm, but his gaze carried a hint of anticipation.

Nian Jinsui pondered for a moment before nodding. "Sure, you do need a break. It’s good to relax once in a while."

After all, his monthly assessment for harming Qin Chengyu was already complete, so he didn’t need to push him to stay home and work out. Qin Chengyu rarely asked to go out, so it seemed reasonable to indulge him.

That evening, Chu Hejun arrived first at the reserved private room. The moment Nian Jinsui entered, his face lit up with a smile—only to freeze upon spotting Qin Chengyu trailing behind.

"Jinsui, why did you bring him?"

"You didn’t say I couldn’t bring someone. I’ll cover the bill tonight, then." Nian Jinsui sat down without a care, flipping through the menu. "It’s cold. Hotpot is perfect for this weather."

Chu Hejun’s disappointment was fleeting, quickly replaced by a forced smile. "Of course, tonight’s on me. Order whatever you like."

Qin Chengyu, however, picked up on Chu Hejun’s subtle dismay. A faint, mocking smile curled his lips as he calmly took a seat beside Nian Jinsui.

This slight expression didn’t escape Chu Hejun’s sharp eyes, and he clenched his jaw in frustration. This guy must’ve come on purpose. Typical Qin family—always insufferable.

It was clear that Chu Hejun and Qin Chengyu were like oil and water, their mutual disdain palpable.

Soon, the hotpot ingredients were brought to the table. Nian Jinsui had ordered a divided pot with spicy broth and a mild one, and the three quickly began cooking their meal.

"Jinsui, are you having the spicy or the mild broth?" Chu Hejun asked.

"Spicy, of course. It’s only mildly spicy—I can handle it." Nian Jinsui gleefully tossed several plates of food into the bubbling spicy broth.

Chu Hejun fished out some broccoli from the spicy broth and placed it in Nian Jinsui’s bowl. "The meat isn’t ready yet. Have some veggies first."

But Nian Jinsui wrinkled his nose and pushed the bowl aside. "I don’t like broccoli. You eat it."

While Nian Jinsui knew broccoli was great for fitness enthusiasts, he simply couldn’t stand its peculiar taste.

"Wait, wasn’t it you who ordered it?"

Nian Jinsui shook his head. "That was for Qin Chengyu. He loves his vegetables."

"I don’t like broccoli either," Qin Chengyu replied coolly.

Chu Hejun, visibly annoyed, moved to toss the broccoli into Qin Chengyu’s bowl but was stopped by Nian Jinsui again.

"Hold on! He can’t handle spicy food. Just leave it aside."

Chu Hejun gritted his teeth. "Let me guess, you ordered the mild broth for him too?"

"Of course," Nian Jinsui replied nonchalantly, as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

"And what about me? Didn’t think to order anything I like?" Chu Hejun asked, half-pouting, half-irritated.

"I don’t know what you like," Nian Jinsui answered matter-of-factly.

Chu Hejun: …

Well, he couldn’t argue with that.

Meanwhile, Qin Chengyu quietly fished some tripe out of the spicy broth and placed it in Nian Jinsui’s bowl. "Jinsui, the tripe is ready. I know you love it."

"Ah, you know me so well!" Nian Jinsui beamed.

"Mm." Qin Chengyu’s voice was low and soft. He glanced at Chu Hejun with a faint, victorious smirk.

The tension in the room rose palpably as Chu Hejun silently ground his molars. This was supposed to be a chance to bond with Nian Jinsui, but it had turned into a three-person gathering full of subtle jabs.

"Chu Hejun, hurry up and eat! The meat will get overcooked," Nian Jinsui urged, blissfully unaware of the simmering rivalry.

"Fine…" Chu Hejun adjusted his expression and picked up his chopsticks.

As they ate, Nian Jinsui suddenly remembered something. "By the way, you said on the phone you wanted to discuss something important. What is it?"

At this, Chu Hejun’s face turned serious. "Jinsui, we’ve figured out who was behind the trouble during the school gala."

Nian Jinsui wasn’t surprised. The Chu family wielded enough power that solving such petty schemes was inevitable.

"Oh? Who was it?" He feigned curiosity, fully aware of the answer.

"Ye Kang."

"Really? No way!" Nian Jinsui gasped dramatically, leaning into his over-the-top performance.

Although his reaction was a bit exaggerated, Chu Hejun, now thoroughly biased by his rose-tinted view of Nian Jinsui, didn’t find it odd. He continued, his tone grave:

"He even tried to pin the blame on you, claiming you instructed him to do it. He wanted to frame you."

"What?! That’s outrageous!" Nian Jinsui exclaimed, still acting shocked.

Qin Chengyu shot him a sidelong glance. Was Nian Jinsui genuinely unaware?

His gaze lingered on Nian Jinsui’s wide eyes and slightly parted lips, darkening slightly. This expression… is oddly adorable.

Meanwhile, Chu Hejun was seething. "We’ve confirmed it was him. Originally, I wanted the Chu family to deal with him, but since this involves you, I wanted to hear your opinion first."

"I…" Nian Jinsui opened his mouth, ready to agree that Ye Kang deserved punishment. After all, Ye Kang’s duplicity was undeniable.

But before he could finish, the system interrupted him.

[Attention, Host. To ensure the continuation of the main storyline, the Host must spare Ye Kang.]

Nian Jinsui blinked, processing the message. So Ye Kang still has a role to play and can’t be written off yet.

"I think… he must’ve just had a lapse in judgment. Let’s give him another chance this time," Nian Jinsui said carefully, choosing his words.

Though he was deeply annoyed by Ye Kang’s actions, the system’s orders left him with no choice.

Chu Hejun was visibly frustrated. "A lapse in judgment? You really believe that? Who knows how many times he’s done this to you before?"

Nian Jinsui hesitated. Before he had taken over this body, many of its previous misdeeds hadn’t been framed on him—they were genuinely his doing.

"I’ve done my share of bad things too," Nian Jinsui admitted softly. "Let’s give him a chance."

"Are you serious?" Chu Hejun was incredulous. In his mind, the Nian Jinsui he knew would never let such a grave injustice slide so easily.

"Yes, Chu Hejun. We’re friends, right? Consider this a favor to me. I’ll explain everything to Ning Liang’an myself," Nian Jinsui reassured him.

Though the system required him to protect Ye Kang, he couldn’t replace Ning Liang’an’s right to feel hurt or angry. He would have to handle the fallout personally.
